Tags link the topic to Similar Content widget below. Without tags, Similar Content widget does not render.

You can see other topics listed in the Similar Content widget that used the same tags and your topic appears in the widget under other topics that used the same tags (many-to-many relationship).

With tags and Similar Content widget, your topics get more exposure, comments and views and can get featured in Trending Topics and Staff Picks. See Help page for more info on how to make your topics go VIRAL (search for the word "viral" on the Help page).
